Day 2: The Ant

story of ant suleiman for kids
The beauty of doing this 30 day activity is being able to revisit stories in the Qur’an. I listened to the tafseer of these two ayaat on Bayyinah TV and I learnt SO much. I highly recommend Bayyinah to anyone who isn’t already subscribed and Alhamdullilah they’re giving away a free month trial this month. Click here to sign up!

Our added activity (in addition to discussing the story) was to go to the library and borrow a book on Insects which we all found fascinating.

30 day activity: Day 2:

Imagine this, three armies are marching into a valley. The Valley of the Ants, so named because it’s filled with ant holes. Armies of men, of jinn and of birds are all under the command of Suleiman AS. Think about his enormous power, he’s rich, got this huge kingdom, can command the jinn, can communicate with animals and suddenly, he hears an ant.

Now armies are loud and there are three different armies and they’re marching (that would up the decibel level), and Suleiman AS hears an ANT.
It’s a she-ant (the Qur’an explicitly says it’s a female ant, because of course, the Creator knows that Queen ants run the show in a colony)
She tells the rest of the ants to go into the ant holes because Suleiman and his armies might crush them and she explicitly says ‘while they perceive not’ i.e. they wouldn’t do it on purpose. Allah is telling us that the ants are knowledgable and they have a public broadcast system that comes from their Queen. So the next time ants pass by, remember that they’re NOT insignificant to Allah. He ‘azza wa jal has recorded their conversation in the Qur’an.

And Suleiman AS hearing this, smiles, a smile he couldn’t contain. Why? Because he had been blessed with yet another amazing ability. And his reaction? It wasn’t ‘oh how awesome am I?! I can hear insects too!’ but rather, it was du’a.

He immediately asked Allah to INSPIRE him, to put it IN him to be grateful for the favours Allah has granted him. He had this instant recognition that this new ability has been added and it’s completely from Allah. He asks Allah to enable him to do everything in a righteous way, in a way that Allah is pleased with.

How powerful is this du’a and how many incredible lessons are there in just these two verses of the Qur’an.

“My Lord! Inspire and bestow upon me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favours which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by Your Mercy among Your righteous slaves.” [Naml: 19]
