Encouraging Good Deeds on the First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

Activity for Kids in Dhul Hijjah Encouraging Good Deeds

Our children LOVED the Ramadan Activity (loved is probably an understatement), every morning in Ramadan it was the first thing they rushed to do; open an envelope, read the ayah in the Qur’an and then stick the card up on the chart. They loved the routine of it and Alhamdullilah a lot of good has come after the activity as well.

As we move into Dhul Hijjah, the best 10 days of the year, those of us not performing Hajj want to increase in our good deeds in any way we can. While we definitely want to introduce the concept of Hajj to our kids (see these fantastic posts for ideas and resources: Modest Munchies, Read Little Muslims & Gilded Dunya), we also want to ensure that our kids grow up knowing how special these days are, a chance to increase in doing good, another huge opportunity for reward from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

A 10 day calendar is in order and rather than reinvent the wheel, we’re just going to do what worked for us in Ramadan. Envelopes, cards and a chart! Except this time, in shaa Allah we’ll be focusing on good deeds. Deeds that are simple enough to explain to our 3 year olds, that can spark discussion and an activity or two.

We also view it as an opportunity to reflect and act on these sunnah acts in our own lives. These good deeds require no introduction and most of us are familiar with them but Alhamdullilah this is an opportunity to really focus on them WITH our kids and implement them in the best way.

As with the Ramadan Activity, we hope this is a means to open up discussion, in particular emphasizing that these are the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (salalahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). We’ve included a PDF with the hadith that pertain to each good deed as well as a few ideas/resources to spark discussion.

May Allah ‘azza wa jal enable us to make most of these blessed days!
